Associate Justice Lillehaug was appointed to the Court by Governor Mark Dayton on June 3, 2013 to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Associate Justice Paul Anderson on May 31, 2013 having reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. Lillehaug was an attorney from Minneapolis, former U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota (1994-1998), and DFL candidate for Attorney General in 1998. Lillehaug retired in July 2020. Governor Tim Walz appointed 5th Judicial District Court Judge Gordon Moore to fill the vacancy on August 3, 2020.

MacDonald was an attorney from Rosemount, former Hennepin County Conciliation Court Judge (1999-2014), and nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 2016 and 2018.
