Special election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of DFL Senator Tracy Beckman on February 26, 1999 following his appointment to become Minnesota State Director of the Farm Service Agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Thompson was a resident of Mankato and Dean of Students at Bethany Luthern College. He placed second in the GOP special primary.
