Minnesota held its first state run presidential primary since 1956 following the passage of a 1989 law. As in the 1916 iteration of the primary, voters had to indicate the name of the political party for which they were voting prior to receiving a ballot. The primary was suspended in 1996 and the law repealed for a third time (1917, 1957) in 1999.
