Special election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of DFL Senator Alec G. Olson on December 29, 1976 to become Lieutenant Governor.
Setzepfandt was a veteranarian from Bird Island who was unanimously endorsed by the 21st District DFL. Setzepfandt was also a state Representative (HD 21B, 1975-1977) who had just been elected to a second term in November 1974.
Carlson was a resident of Wilmar.
