Attorney General Spannaus was reelected to a second term. His 31.90-point victory margin was the largest in a race for the office since 1942 when Attorney General J.A.A. Burnquist defeated Famer-Laborite David Erickson by 33.46 points. Spannaus' 64.29 percent was also the largest since Attorney General Lyndon Smith ran unopposed in 1918 and the largest in a contested election since Attorney General George Simpson won 66.40 percent in 1910.
Nyquist was a Brookly Center attorney and former two-term state Senator (SD 32, 1967-1973).
