Hammar was a farmer from St. James and the party-endorsed candidate. He was also an agricultural economist, former professor at the Univeristy of Missouri, and DFL nominee for the 2nd CD in 1958 and 1962.
Kjeldahl was a resident of Fergus Falls, former assistant to U.S. Representative Coya Knutson, and candidate for the 7th CD in 1962, 1964, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1988.
