Treasurer Bjornson was reelected to a fourth nonconsecutive term in a rematch from the 1956 election against Hansen.
Hansen was a farmer from Ulen, DFL candidate for Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner in 1950, nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1952, and former Treasurer (1955-1957).
