Chief Justice Loring was reelected to his fifth term overall on the Court. Loring resigned on July 15, 1953 to retire from public office. Governor C. Elmer Anderson appointed Associate Justice Roger Dell to fill the vacancy on July 16, 1953.

Peterson was an attorney from St. Louis Park, former four-term state Representative (HD 44, 1939-1947), and DFL candidate for Attorney General in 1956.
