Associate Justice Gallagher was reelected to a second term.

Associate Justice Knutson was appointed to the Court by Governor Luther Youngdahl on May 10, 1948 after the resignation of Associate Justice Julius Olson on May 10, 1948 due to ill health. Knutson was a resident of Warren, sitting Fourteenth Judicial District Judge (1941-1948), former Mayor of Warren, former Warren City Attorney, and manager of the Warren Telephone Company.

McGrath was an attorney from St. Paul and sitting St. Paul Justice of the Peace since 1939.

Melin was an attorney from Minneapolis making his fifth of 12 bids for the Court. Melin was also a candidate for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1942, 1944, and 1946, nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1950, 1952, 1956, 1958, and 1962, nominee for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1954, and candidate for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1934 and 1960.
