Thye was a farmer from Northfield, former Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture (1939-1942), Lieutenant Governor (1943), and sitting Governor (1943-1947).

Carlson was a psychologist from St. Paul, Trotskyist Anti-War nominee for U.S. Senate in 1940, Socialist Workers nominee for Vice-President in 1948, and Socialist Workers nominee for the 5th CD in 1950. Carlson was nominated by petition.
