Treasurer Schmahl was reelected to a seventh nonconsecutive term. This was the fourth consecutive general election matchup between Schmahl and Halverson.

Halverson was a farmer from Revere, former state Representative (HD 10, 1933-1937), and former Treasurer (1937-1939).

Fitzgerald was a resident of Minneapolis, Democratic nominee for Treasurer in 1942, and DFL candidate for Treasurer in 1950.

Jorgenson was a resident of Askov who was endorsed by the state Communist Party for the office of Secretary of State at the party convention in June. She ran a sticker campaign. Some stickers were presumably mistakenly placed for the office of Treasurer by a small number of voters.
