Senator Kellogg became the fourth incumbent to lose reelection joining Democrat James Shields in 1859, Democrat Charles Towne in 1901, and Republican Moses Clapp in 1916.
Shipstead was a dentist from Glenwood, former Glenwood Mayor (1911-1913), former state Representative (HD 47, 1917-1919), and Republican candidate for Governor in 1920.
Olesen was a resident of Cloquet and former vice-president of the Minnesota State Federated Women's Clubs. She was the first woman candidate and nominee for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota history.
