The election for this seat was for a 6-year term. Appointed Associate Justice Wallace Douglas sought the GOP nomination but was defeated by Jaggard. Jaggard was an attorney from St. Paul, former professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, and Ramsey County District Court judge.

Hall was an attorney from Red Wing, former state Senator (SD 22, 1885-1887), and former Democratic U.S. Representative (CD 03, 1891-1895).
