Associate Justices Canty, Mitchell, and Buck were the fourth, fifth, and sixth Justices to be defeated at the ballot box following appointed Associate Justice Greenleaf Clark in 1881 and Republican Associate Justices Daniel Dickinson and Charles Vanderburgh in 1892.

Lovely was an attorney from Albert Lea, former Freeborn County Attorney, and Republican nominee for the 1st CD in 1886. Lovely resigned on October 1, 1905 nearly a year following his 1904 electoral defeat. Governor John Johnson appointed Charles Elliott to fill the vacancy on October 1, 1905. Elliott was a resident of Minneapolis and Hennepin County District Court judge.

Brown was a resident of Morris, former Stevens County Attorney, and former Judge of the Sixteenth Judicial District. Brown was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on November 20, 1899 by Governor John Lind following the resignation of Daniel Buck on November 18, 1899.

Lewis was an attorney from Duluth, former Otter Tail County Attorney, and former Eleventh Judicial District Judge.

Harris was an attorney from St. Paul.

Temple was an attorney from Minneapolis.

Twitchell was an attorney from Minneapolis.
