This election was a rematch of the 1896 general election between the incumbent Koerner and McKinnon.
Treasurer Koerner was reelected to a third term.
McKinnon was a resident of Crookston, former two-term Mayor of Crookston, former postmaster of Crookston, owner of a carriage factory, and Democratic nominee for Treasurer in 1896.
Rahilly was a farmer from Lake City, former state Representative (HD 15, 1874-1875, 1878-1879; HD 23, 1883-1885), and state Senator (SD 15, 1879-1881).
