O'Leary was a colonel from Avoca. The state committeee replaced original Democratic nominee George T. Gardner with O'Leary on the ticket after Gardner broke his right leg.

Fosnes was an attorney from Montevideo, Prohibition nominee for the 3rd CD in 1888, and Democratic-People's state Representative (HD 43, 1897-1899; HD 18, 1899-1901).
