The 1.57-point victory margin was the narrowest for the office at this point in Minnesota history and only the second out of nine elections to be decided by single digits.

Dike, a resident of Faribault, was appointed Treasurer in February 1873 after the resignation of William Seeger. The GOP decided to nominate Grinager and Dike was instead nominated by the Democrats and Anti-Monopolists (a party that opposed monopolies in the wood and coal industries).

Grinager was a resident of Bath Township and United States Assessor in Mantorville.

Sater was a lumber dealer from Worthington.
