Cook County
Cook County is located at the far Northeastern tip of Minnesota along the Ontario border and was established on March 9, 1874 by the State Legislature. Cook County was named for Major Michael Cook, a carpenter from Faribault who served in the State Senate during the first four legislatures (SD 05, 1857-1861, SD 08, 1861-1863) and was killed at the Battle of Nashville in 1864 during the Civil War. Grand Marais is the county seat. Source: Minnesota Geographic Names, by Warren Upham (Minnesota Historical Society, 1969).
