Amundson immigrated to the United States in 1849 and settled in Vernon County, Wisconsin. He came to St. Paul in 1853, moved to La Crosse (Wisconsin) in 1861, then Winona in 1863, before settling in Saint Peter in 1867. Amundson served 12 years on the State Board of Corrections and Charities (1889-1901).
