| Notes: | Gitlow was elected as a Socialist to the New York Assembly in 1917. He lost reelection in 1918. He was a candidate for New York City Mayor in 1921 under the Workers League banner and ran for New York Governor as a Communist in 1926. Gitlow was arrested of criminal anarchy in 1919 under New York laws for publications he had made and imprisoned from 1920 to 1922. He was pardoned by Governor Al Smith in 1925. Gitlow also headed the American Communist Party for several years. |
